Corruption Feared in
During an
ongoing Imperial
investigation of
Lord Adad’s
Glasswork’s last
year the factory,
as well as the
owner – one
Lord Adad of
Anbara – were
destroyed in a
fire. However,
reports indicate
that after Adad was killed that the factory was ransacked and
all records, ledgers and documents belonging to Lord Adad
were taken and the workers locked in the basement before
the factory was set ablaze.
Adad has long been suspected to have used illegal slaves in
his factory to manufacture and produce his glassworks.
Imperial agents were contacted and asked to investigate the
factory and determine the veracity of the claims of illegal
slave labor, as well as who was purchasing the illegally
manufactured goods.
Before the investigation could be concluded the factory was
destroyed, as well as the records and information which
could demonstrate who was acting as the middle-man for his
allegedly illegally produced merchandise and who was
supplying him with his work force. Currently all of the
recently freed factory workers are being held in Imperial
Sources have claimed that Adad did not formally use “Illegal
Slave Labor” to operate his factory, but instead utilized a
legal version of “indentured servitude” which allowed him to
keep workers contained in the factory and under his
complete control.
However, during a recent interview with reporters from T he
Garioch Gazette an anonymous source revealed that Adad
had routinely ordered beatings and sometimes outright
torture of factory workers; brutal and excessive punishments for either indentured
servants or a factory force. In addition to this, Imperial guardsmen were routinely seen
patrolling the factory when it was currently under operations.

Forging New Friendships and
At the last Gathering an individual named Arctos, a member of
the Order of Flagellen, made an honorable and conciliatory
gesture to a follower of Garioch to help ease any lingering
tensions because a misunderstanding which occurred in the
past between both himself and the citizen.
During evening meal Arctos made a general
announcement to the entire town explaining the issue and
then offered a public apology to the aggrieved party because
of the unfortunate incident which had happened between
them in the past.
Hoping for the chance for reconciliation Arctos presented
the individual with a piece of artwork as a demonstration of
his sincerity.
The artwork was an ancient ceramic pot, which Arctos
personally fully repaired and restored to better symbolize the
chance to shape new things, including both friendships and
alliances, as well as the chance for creating a fresh start.
“As I have repaired this, I offer it as a symbol to
demonstrate my desire to repair any misunderstandings and I
hope that we can create new and lasting friendships for the
future,” he said.
The gift was gratefully received and was in turn offered to
the Reverend Mother Gralen Leatherby to be donated and
kept at the local Temple of Garioch in Fortune’s Bend .
“I sincerely appreciate this wonderful gesture and was
deeply moved by it. The reason I donated it to the Church is
because it is my hope that anyone who enters the Temple of
the Shaper will see that wonderful gift and remember that no
matter how grave a situation between two parties might seem
that there is always the chance to forge something better if
people are willing to try,” said the recipient of the gift.
Innocent Citizens Held In
“Corruption” Continued from Page 1
The anonymous source also stated that an elite guild of
Bounty Hunters were used to track down escaped factory
workers and may have also been used to capture or “recruit”
for Adad’s work force.
Further reports suggest that Adad’s people may have used monies to bribe local
officials to look the other way so that his project could continue. The investigation,
conducted by Constable Primya Haasbet, was concluded in barely a week. However, as
of now all evidence of impropriety has been destroyed with the factory, with the
possible exception of living eyewitnesses who had been forced to work in the factory.
At the time of this publication all the remaining factory workers who served Adad
are currently still being held in Imperial custody (formally classified as “quarantine”) in
Fort Jaspar.
If any of these workers had witnessed any impropriety between Adad’s people and
local officials then it is clear that keeping them isolated from the general public is a sure
way to protect any guilty parties from being examined further.
If you wish to assist in any way be sure to contact your local Imperial Magistrate.

Letter from The Editor
Well, a new year is upon us and I don’t know about you, but I’m eager to see
what it brings. Visits from nobles, a masquerade and knowing that spring is
coming and with it some bright and warm weather are all things that I’m
sure everyone is looking forward to.
But with a new year comes new challenges and one of the biggest
challenges we all face in life is knowing what to do when the unexpected
problem comes before us.
In this case we’ve all heard the reports of the declaration of secession in
Volbrecht which is headed up by the Brechtish warlord Weinart who has
augmented his forces with various local bannerman and minor warlords
who have claimed they are formally rejecting Imperial Rule.
Most people are probably outraged and shocked by Weinart’s actions.
After all; Ravvin’s army is still a genuine threat to Rues and if that various
leaders or our world aren’t prepared to stand together as a team then it’ll just
be easier for Ravvin to defeat us. Meantime, nobody likes a traitor and
fighting the Empire hardly seems like an idea anyone would or should
But the more I thought about it, the more I started to consider some of
the more subtl issues, not the least is what I myself might do if I was I was
forced to bend the knee.
Now don’t mistake me, I’m not agreeing with Weinart’s decision, but I
think that this issue touches on something worth considering. Specifically,
what is our duty when we see someone doing something we find to be
personally offensive, distasteful and in some cases outright immoral or
disgusting, even when what they’re doing isn’t formally hurting us? Do we
chose to fight and condemn anything that we find to be “morally wrong” or
do we try to accept each other and other people’s differences even though
we may not agree with those beliefs?
As of now Weinart is a rabble rouser who’s encouraged bordering
provinces in his nation to ignore Imperial rule and declare independence
from the Empire. I don’t know why he wants independence and personally I
think it’s foolish to turn his back on Imperial support when Ravvin is still
out there, but for some reason his chief issue seems to be that he doesn’t
want to be part of the Empire anymore.
To me, this is where things start getting complicated.
After all, the man seems to want the freedom to live his life how he sees
fit and if that means he no longer wants the support and friendship of the
Empire, is it really our place to tell him he’s wrong? Should he, a Purposed
Being with his own Free Will and the Genesori given right to chose his own
Fate, be required to remain under the rule of a foreign power – even if that
power is an Emperor who is benign, just and supported by the Genesori? Do
we have the right to tell him he cannot choose another path simply because
we find oathbreaking contemptible?
Of course, Weinart’s secession probably won’t be as genteel or peaceful
as a simple declaration to reject Imperial rule. More likely that this is only
the beginning of some hard fighting with his newly created army; in which
case I know I won’t be the only one to try to stop him.
On the other hand, if his only crime turns out to be breaking an oath
simply to encourage his people to turn aside from foreign leadership and
look instead to “home rule” with Bretchtish people being ruled by Brechtish
leaders; well, is that such a terrible ambition?
After all, when it comes to an individual’s Divine Right to follow the
Purpose that the Genesori gave them, even if that Purpose means that the
individual ends up doing something that I personally find to be disgusting,
unethical, or even blasphemous – well, just because I personally consider
something bad doesn’t always make it so.
In the end I think that no matter what happens with Weinart the Faithful
can at least take away one idea from this entire situation: do I, an imperfect
being filled with my own faults and errors like everyone else, have the right
to determine without any possible doubt that someone else’s choices, and
not mine, are the ones that need to be judged negatively?

Alved Bodies Being Used to Create
Purposed Race Close to Extinction in
Cag – “Speaker of Stone” is a Staff Writer for The Garioch Gazette
An Appeal to All Alved, Citizens of Fortune’s Bend and All
of Rues
The situation in the Underholme has become untenable. I have been
informed that our people are close to extinction. There is hope, however, as
it is apparent that we have been called to the surface to save our people from
this extinction. There is a way we may be saved. If all communities are able
to do so, I implore you to collect what you need and come to the surface.
Gather in F ortune’s Bend , and we will do what we can to place communities
in areas of the surface where they can be safe and most easily assimilate.
I offer my services as a liaison with the surface community. I have been
living on the surface for the past four to five years and am familiar with
many of their customs and practices. The people here are eager to welcome
you to our community and will do what they can to assist.
Our bodies are being used to create the plague in the Underholme. We
cannot afford to lose any more of our people to this horrific threat. If we
vacate we may be able to control the further spread of the undead. Please
consider the offer the kind people of F ortune’s Bend make to your
community. It is my belief that this may be only a temporary measure, but
we will see what the Will of the Genosori is in this matter after we are safe.
May They bless you and keep you in your travels. If you are having
difficulty making it to the surface or to F ortune’s Bend , please contact me
there and we will be happy to assist in any way we can. Travel may be
difficult, but we are informed that bringing with you any gems or precious
metals you have access to will assist the surface people, and can be used in
trade as needed.
With hope that you are well and able to make this journey, for the Genosori and our

Otteril Clan Completes Quest with “The
Discovers Possible Link with Ancient City of
During the last Gathering the Otteril clan was asked to join with a being named Terrance, sometimes referred
to as “The Songripper” and help on a quest to find various pieces of information and decipher their somewhat
confusing meaning.
During this quest they were able to discover various pieces of scattered text which referenced a being
known as “The Tuneweaver” who gathered a host of “Bards” who sang mighty songs that inspired the
citizens of the town who protected a “Pool of Fire”. However, before the song was finished the texts claim
that the “Voice was ripped from the throats of the Bards…” and that “the music was unfinished; the song
unheard and the last note untaught by The Weaver of Tunes.”
According to the texts, at the conclusion of this confrontation The Weaver of Tunes was dissuaded from
continuing the song by a being known as “The Coward” who encouraged her to “Save those who wish to be
The sum total of the story outlined with the texts seems to be, at best, enigmatic and at worst an
unfinished tale with little to no purpose. However, a close examination of historical records provide enough
evidence to suggest that the piece is likely allegorical to the destruction of the city of Vahetesh. Furthermore,
the allegory could be read as evidence which could provide useful information to confronting many of the
troubles faced by the citizens of Fortune’s Bend .
First we must examine the parallels between this tale and the destruction of Vahetesh.
As everyone knows, Vahetesh was an ancient Al’tiesh city. However, perhaps its most important
inhabitants were a woman named Tahin and her twin brother Arash; children to Yana and Graev.
Tahin and Arash were unique in that they were in fact Stars who had come to Rues in mortal form.
In the heavens there is a major constellation called “The Flame” which is made up of various stars which
were conjoined under designated aspects that balanced with each other. These aspects included aspects which
included The Campfire and The Open Grave; The Burning Inferno and The Abyss; The Hearth and The
Precipice and lastly the Spark and the Void, who became Arash and Tahin respectively.
Each Star was considered “family” to the others in the Constellation; however, elements such as The
Spark and The Void saw themselves as akin to Brother and Sister whereas they saw the other Stars in the
Constellation as more akin to “cousins”.
Historic evidence suggests that during the last battle at Vahetesh Arash remained within the city limits to
help the citizens exit the city through a Magical Gate which was known as “The Pool of Fire” (referenced in
the texts found by the Otteril Clan). However, Tahin was not present during the attack.
Tahin was not present because she was leading an attack on a place called “The Gate of Moths” which
was the location of Death. The decision to do battle with Death was inspired by the belief that if “Death was
absent then no warrior would fall.” During this fight she was accompanied by a general named “Sarniak” and
she herself was referred to as “The Voice”. The suggestion that Tahin would be called “The Voice” is
certainly allegorical to the name “The Tuneweaver”; or a being that might use songs to fight with.
If we take the allegory further we may assume that the “bards” referenced in the text discovered by the
Otteril were likely soldiers or warriors of Tahin’s army. Further speculation might suggest that Tahin gave
power to her soldiers and that when she was absent (“The Voice was ripped from their throats”) that the
warriors were not able to resist the darkness.
During the absence of Tahin and her army Arash and the city of Vahetesh were betrayed by an unnamed
Council Member who took a good portion of the citizens through the Pool of Fire and collapsed the Gate after
passing through, thereby trapping Arash and the remainder of the citizens behind to be overcome by the
While this concludes the allegory found by the Otters (specifically regarding the elements of the “Last
Note Unfinished”) it is clear that there is more to the story.
When Tahin returned she found that only her brother Arash was alive. Angered by the actions of the
traitorous Council Member she drew her Dagger and “tore a hole through the fabric of the Veil” and tried to
pursue the Council Member to enact vengeance, but she left her dagger behind to hold the Veil open.

Quest Continued from Page 5
During that moment Arash saw his sister’s dagger and drew it out and stabbed himself in the heart and thus
fulfilled a prophecy which claimed that he would “die by his sister’s dagger”.
While these various elements are at least interesting, they certainly lead to many further questions and
other possible speculations.
Tahin’s dagger, if it was able to sunder the Veil, would allow anyone who possessed it to travel almost
unobstructed without the need of a magical gate.
When Arash ended his life and his mortal body died then his spirit was allowed to return to the Cosmos.
This would mean that his suicide had a Purpose; but it would also likely mean that the Star known as “The
Spark” would have returned to the Cosmos when Arash died; though when the Star returns to wander Rues as
a mortal it is likely that it was not shining in Constellation known as The Flame.
During the Gathering when Fortune’s Bend was invaded by the Leviathan we discovered that this being
came from a place called “The Shade” and was returned to The Shade by using powerful magic in the form of
song. This entire action is consistent with the above tale in which “Creatures of Darkness” (allegorical to
“The Shade”) which attacked Vahetesh and were confronted and challenged by “The Tuneweaver” (or
“Sirens” in this case) and used Songs or Incantations and return the beast to The Shade.
While all of the above information is no secret to those who are willing to read it (supplemented by mere
speculation and guesswork) special appreciation should be given to the Otteril family for finding the texts
during their time with Terrance “The Songripper” and inspiring this article.
As for discovering any further Songs/Incantations of power it would be wise to consider looking in the
Great Library for supplemental details.
Further information might be discovered by using magical communication to speak to certain individuals
who might possess unique knowledge on these subjects; such as the Siren Berryl (who was present when the
creature called “The Leviathan” was defeated), the historian Evander Banrion (Ghostwalkers cannot die of
old age), Tahin or Arash (they have been known to spend time with Death), a being that is extremely familiar
with the Shade and possesses a strange or magical blade which allows them to travel through the Veil at will
and is extremely powerful – though it should be noted it is possible that such a being may be Arash himself or
traveling under an alias, and finally the being known as Terrance.
The next issue of T he Garioch Gazette will include some additional information on this subject;
including glyphs, symbols and names as well as translations and further sources cited.
Finally it should be added that although the facts are likely already known to many, the conclusions are
mainly speculation and guesswork and it very possible that many of these speculations and conclusions may
be incorrect.

The massive success of the

factors, including the brilliant

Leviathan Attacks
Fortune’s Bend
During the last Gathering
the people of Fortune’s

massive creature from
beneath the deep called
The Leviathan.
The citizens who helped
beat back this monstrous
creature were first asked to
aid a pair of Sirens in the
rescue of their sister,
Berryl, who had been held by what were called “Dark Sirens” and other creatures which were called
“Corrupted Water Elementals”.
The people of Fortune’s Bend rallied to the aid of these innocents and did what they could to stop
the assault from the Leviathan. After an

epic struggle the Sirens were successful in their efforts in soothing the
Leviathan back into its slumber by using a powerful Incantation.
During a brief interview with Berryl, the recently recovered Siren
sister, it was revealed that the Leviathan is a creature from The Shade. Those
citizens who are interested in learning more about the Leviathan would likely
be able to find out more by questioning scholars who have studied that
Further questions remain, however.
This is the second attack on Fortune’s Bend in the past two
Gatherings from creatures that live below the surface of the sea. In addition,
the use of “Corrupted Water Elementals” seems consistent with the assault on
Volbrecht roughly a year ago when a powerful caster seemed to have
attempted to try to drown that nation with massive storms and flooding;
flooding which was augmented by Water Elementals.
In addition, the presence of Sirens moving on the surface of Rues
and interacting with the citizens of Fortune’s Bend, as well as the multiple
seemingly coincidental attacks on the land of Rues from undersea threats begs
a series of questions about what citizens truly know about what is beneath the
Various Priests of Garioch are considering preparing a formal
request to the Emperor to fund and sanction a proper expedition to explore the
depths of the waters. Minor expeditions have occurred in the past as specific
tools crafted by Tinkers allowed heroes to explore the depths of the ocean
floor for brief amounts of time.
But with multiple attacks from the oceans coupled with threats from
the waters are increasing it might be useful for both the Empire and The
Federation to find new allies beneath the surface of the ocean. There is also
substantial circumstantial evidence which suggests that the seas and waters of
Rues had been altered on a global scale in the past to seriously affect the
surface during cataclysmic times. With so many dark issues looming, it seems
very likely that a concentrated expedition beneath the sea might prove useful
in the future.

Direction in Town
During the most recent visit from the Reverend Mother the patrons of the Church of Garioch met to discuss
their goals, dreams and ambitions for the future of the Church in Fortune’s Bend .
Several ideas where brought forth, including the possibility of creating or discovering an artifact
of power which could be carried into the field of battle and used to fuel the powers of the Faithful when
their powers start to wane far from Holy Temples.
In addition to these efforts the clergy also discussed the possibility of having a more direct
connection with Imperial matters and the government of the Empire on a national level.
A final point of discussion centered on the issue of
slavery in the Church as well as the Empire as a whole.
One of the Faithful took a surprising position and
extolled the virtues of slavery, much to the consternation of the other parishioners. In response to the open
support of slavery, Father Cutter argued that slavery was the denial of free will, and therefore preventing
Purposed Races from pursuing their Purpose and should be opposed with any means necessary.
However, the majority of the Church seemed to be of a more neutral ground on this matter.
“I stand opposed to illegal slavery, but am tolerant of legal slavery as the law demands,” said Godrick Dwyre
when asked on his opinion about slavery and the suggestion of using direct action to prevent it.
Dwyre’s position reflected the feelings of most of the Parishioners, who were opposed to the evils of slavery,
but showed a level of courtesy for the values of other nations and respected the integrity of Imperial Law.
Another Victory for the Living
Against the Dead
from Ravvin Attack Page 1
Shield walls were well positioned and utilized; holding the line firmly so that casters and range
fighters could attack from safety. Healers continued to move back and forth behind the wounded, taking an
injured warrior from his position to minister to his needs while his brothers shifted positions to hold the line
and field commanders kept their squads in check, but they also made sure that the company that they
worked with was in sync with the other commanders and units on the field; none of them advancing too far
forward and opening the lines to being breached, and none of them letting a gap open up or the citizens as a
whole feel pressed, but in the end, Ravvin’s forces were pushed back and the saved for another day.
Congratulations to all of those who fought that day; your efforts shall not be forgotten!
Meanwhile, during the time between the last Gathering and this one Ravvin’s armies have
responded and pushed through lands that are not as well defended with the winter months coming. As
Ravvin pushes his armies forward to achieve his dark ends the general consensus is that Ravvin is seeking
power and is trying to usurp Severrin and take his place.
In one of the skirmishes during the last Gathering some citizens had challenged Ravvin verbally
telling him that the Genesori listen to the faithful and hear our prayers. According to witnesses on the field,
Ravvin gave the scornful response – “No he doesn’t!”
While this seems like the mocking from an enemy trying to erode hope, could it also be a valuable
clue regarding Ravvin’s motivations? Is it possible that Ravvin himself feels somehow estranged from the
Genesori? Perhaps Ravvin no longer feels that the Genesori hear him, or value him, as they once did? With
so much focus and attention placed on Death herself, perhaps Ravvin has felt that his own duties and efforts
have been forgotten and ignored?
While defeating Ravvin outright in pitched battle may be the most logical solution, another
possibility may be to attempt to create a true reconciliation between Ravvin and the Genesori as a whole; to
convince Ravvin that the Genesori do hear him and that his Purpose with them does matter.
The idea of helping Ravvin reconcile whatever issues which he may have with his creators and
healing Ravvin’s own inner wounds may seem far too lenient a judgment on a being who has committed
such heinous crimes. But if the Faithful are truly dedicated to healing the troubles of Rues, the possibility of
helping Ravvin recognize his sin, repent of his deeds and seek absolution may be one worth considering.
Page 4 The Garioch Gazette
Page 4
Considerations on Combat and
A recent rash of assaults has begun on the townships of both Western Breaus and Inlyrico near the borders
of the Batterklast Mountains. The attacks are largely from Ravvin’s forces and have been spreading out
quickly and to devastating effect along the border between these two nations.
Many folk will recall that Ravvin’s army had attacked many places throughout the Underholme
recently; specifically Ereskial settlements. While the Ereskial’s main thoroughfare between the
Underholme and the surface is near Anbara, it is not too surprising that if Ravvin’s forces had been under
the Batterklast Mountains assailing the Underhome that the Usurper would elect to have his army push onto
the surface in the north of Rues and far away from heavily guarded exits near Anbara. Further, his advance
would put the main thrust of his army right between two nations and their lightly manned borders.
As to why Ravvin’s forces have not pushed harder during the winter months so far, most tacticians
would suspect that Ravvin is likely planning on spending the winter “recruiting” more warriors. After all,
given the massive amount of Undead who have been seen in his ranks that were created from Disease lately
it is not surprising that during the winter months when famine and plague are more prevalent that Ravvin
can afford to slow his advance for a time and let natural causes do his recruiting for him, though certainly
this would suggest a larger assault in the spring, assuming that this is not merely the calm before the storm.
Meanwhile, as the Imperial capital is on the western side of Rues it seems unlikely that heavy
support dispatched from Pyredom will be able to curtail these advances in the northeastern
side of the
Empire fast enough.
This leaves citizens of both Inlyrico and Braeus in a difficult position as Imperial troops are
already spread thin and a lack of immediate support from the capital is likely to create a further strain on
diplomatic relations which could have a negative impact on the war effort in the future.
These concerns leave the common citizens wondering what it is that they can do to help.
The first suggestion might be to get to the bottom of the mysterious plagues that have been
causing so much concern in Rues. After all, if more of Ravvin’s forces are being enlisted by a strange
plague it seems likely that the plague and Ravvin may be connected. However, even if they are not
connected at all, eliminating a plague is certainly a task that responsible citizens should consider pursuing.
The next obvious choice is to enlist the support of military aid closer to the problem and the most
logical choice being aid from the Wild Nations. As the Wild Nations border both Inlyrico and Braeus it
seems logical to suspect that it their support was enlisted it could help contain the thrust of the army which
threatens the borders of those two nations. But whether or not the Wild Nations will offer formal support to
aid citizens who encroach on their borders remains to be seen, but if all the citizens of Rues do not unite
against this threat as a whole than it is likely that in a very short time all of them will perish one by one.
Citizens interested in helping should petition their Churches and local sources of learning to find
what, or who, is responsible for this plague and what specifically needs to be done to end it. After all, if the
plague can be fixed soon, it may be that Ravvin may have less troops in his army in the future.
In addition, citizens should also consider petitioning their local Imperial diplomats and encourage
them to take more direct steps in establishing better relations with the Wild Nations as a whole in an effort
to create a better relationship with our neighbors. Followers of S everrin and Koreel should also consider
taking direct to petition the Order of Lost Hope to do more direct work with the Wild Nations as well.
As for any neighbors of the Wild Nations; settling on the land of your neighbors without so much
as a “By your leave” is not likely to encourage the trust or support of your neighbors, and both of those
things will be needed to form a better alliance against the dangers of Ravvin’s army.

Attacks from Mysterious Cultists
– Divine Casters and Sorians
Targeted –
During the last Gathering
there were a collection of
Cultists who had targeted and
attacked Divine Casters and
During such
skirmishes these Cultists
were able to expose such
Casters by using either magic
or some other special ability,
which suggests that their
training in combating casters
is much more intensive than
that of simple bandits.
The Cultists could
be identified by the strange
marks or tattoos that were
painted on their faces and some have suggested that they are Sparians; or more specifically that they have
come from the former nation of Drakkenspar.
Drakkenspar was once a mighty kingdom but was destroyed long ago when it was reduced to a
country less inhospitable than the desert of Byse. It has been suggested that the destruction was connected
to a concentrated attack on Arcane Casters on a global scale and this attack not only destroyed Arcane
Casters and multiple Arcane Fonts, but it also destroyed thousands of innocent people and reduced
Drakkenspar to a land more inhospitable than Byse.
As of now the true origin of these Cultists has not yet been determined. However, if the theories
are correct and they are indeed Sparians Spellswords then this could suggest that these cultists may have an
alternative plan or purpose then a few isolated attacks on faithful citizens.
The nation of Drakkenspar was destroyed long ago by the Entropic Pulse and it is very possible
that a modern group has determined to take deliberate steps in destroying the spread of Arcane Magic in
general. However, a more mundane theory suggests that a common tactic of any paramilitary organization
is to first eliminate any unit which can heal or revive opposition. In other words; once the healers have been
destroyed then the warriors will not be able to last very long.
Currently there is circumstantial evidence which may link this Cult with another organization
known as “The Cult of the Moonless Night”. Given the recent astrological phenomena this year (including
multiple Blood Moons and various Lunar Eclipses which could be witnessed over the former ruins of
Drakkenspar) it is possible that such a cult may be engaging in these acts for some dark ritual or evil
Meanwhile there have been increasing issues with Arcane Sanctums which have been noted and
reported. It is possible that the instability of the Fonts may be related to a more subtle attack from Sparian
Spellswords who seek to damage or destroy any Arcane Casters.
If you, or someone you know, are interested in combating threats from the “Cult of the Moonless
Night” then speak to Church Authorities or any citizen who might specialize in fighting dark cults.

Lost Relic Discovered on the Border of Fortune’s Bend
For nearly three years there have been persistent expeditions to
discover the location of a stone which was used to mark the
original borders of Fortune’s Bend when it was originally
founded during the time of the Al’tiesh.
The stone was discovered by Bea of the Alved and Father
Cutter of Braeus during the last gathering near the edge of the
Alentina River which flanks the eastern edge of the town.
The discovery of the marker stone will likely lead to possible
further new and exciting discoveries from the Archeologist
Guild, as well as giving valuable clues regarding the nature of
the former citizens of Fortune’s Bend.
One of the more unique elements of the location of the stone was its very placement.
If an interested party was to draw a straight line directly from the entrance of Death Gates across
the northern thoroughfare of the town it would reach the summit of a hill that houses the remains of a
powerful Gate which has runes and carvings on it which are ancient. If a perpendicular line was drawn at
the halfway point between these two places and traced to the east then the stone marker would be
Theoretically, if a person was to draw a line in a western direction from the same point it is
possible that they might find a similar stone on the town’s western border.
While this theory has yet to be confirmed, further excavation may be forthcoming in the following

Powerful Water
Elementals Attack
Fortune’s Bend
Another massive
attack on the city of
Fortune’s Bend has
occurred, this time
with assistance from
Water Elementals.
Water Elementals
and creatures from
beneath the waves
have been a growing
source of concern
since the massive raid against the nation of Volbrecht
during the spring last year.
As loyal readers may recall, casters attempted to destroy
the very nation of Volbrecht by drowning it beneath the
seas but were defeated by a loose confederation of noble
soldiers and heroic citizens who had traveled from
Fortune’s Bend to stem the tide.
However, though the threat against Volbrecht was halted,
there have been other similar attacks.

The newly

Elf from the
Federated Kingdom of the Selda’niré; of the Arcos Caste.
The Reverend Mother spent only a short while in
Fortune’s Bend during the last Gathering. However, during
that time this reporter was struck with her calm dignity and
pleasant demeanor. Exploring the town and its somewhat
unusual landmarks such as Death’s Gate and the various
ancient landmarks near the five temples just south of the river’s mouth.
As of yet there has been no word about the particular tenets of the Faith that
the Reverend Mother shall be preaching; whether or not her sermons will focus more
on T he Doctrines Of Unity or perhaps other more specific homilies dedicated to the
particular needs of the more unique difficulties that Fortune’s Bend often endures.
With the Church of Garioch becoming larger and more diverse with each
Gathering it is certain that whatever her she has to say and teach there will certainly be
an audience eager to hear her wisdom.
Citizens wishing to identify the Reverend Mother should keep their eyes open
for an Elf with honey-colored hair; a long, turquoise-colored jacket, and well-crafted
For those of you who are interested in learning more of the beliefs of the
Church of Garioch, or exploring your faith in general, all are urged to find and meet
with the Reverend Mother.

– From the Editor –
Well, it’s been an exciting year. For those of you who aren’t in “The Know”, this is the
first copy of the Garioch Gazette to be delivered to Fortune’s Bend formally, and I
have to say, I’m pretty pleased with the results so far.
Of course, I’d like to offer my thanks to all the people who made this edition
possible – of course, you all know who you are, but for now I’ll keep things quiet so as
not to spark any “Imperial Entanglements”, as they say. But accolades and pats on the
back aside, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what we’ve seen so far, especially
some of the more unusual issues and have begun to wonder about possible
connections. Of course, there’s no point in hinting at details when I could just lay
them out, so let’s get to it!
So in the past year we’ve seen some nasty attacks from forces related to water
elementals and aquans; and problems like with water threats have kept on coming,
from the attack on Volbrecht about a year ago and up to that attack when the Alentina
rose up and caused all that havock during the last Gathering.
So here’s a thought; is it possible that folk from Drakkenspar are doing a lot of
attacks that seem to be trying to shift the waters around near certain places for a
reason besides just causing trouble? Of course, I’m no expert here and I’m probably
way off, but I’m curious if it’s possible that all this nonsense they’re causing is just so
that they might be able to unearth more arcane fonts and maybe try to gain more
magical power to become more powerful.
Now that’s just a hunch; I don’t know that for sure, but if my magical power
was augmented by arcane fonts, you can be sure I’d like to find more of them,
especially if they were destroyed or maybe hidden when the land was shifted around.
Here’s another fun idea to “tinker” around with – what if they’re maybe
looking to shift waters around to find the location of the location of Valya Seere? You
know; that island that’s surrounded by magical storms that prevent ships from
entering it, and the same island which protects the magical citadel in the center? And
in case you forgot, Valya Seere was also the same island that heroes traveled to and
discovered the Ritual of Life (which was a pretty powerful ritual).
Now again, this is all just guesswork; but if I was an Arcane Caster looking for a
stronghold filled with magical power (or a place I could learn how to boost my power)
then I might just think of heading there. And if that island was protected by magical
storms on the surface of the water then I might think of learning to travel under the
waters using aquans and water elementals to do it.
While I’m at it, here’s another fun tidbit to chew over: as brutal and horrible as
the Entropic Pulse was, and as much as I dislike the Sparrians – the Entropy Sphere’s
real handy to have when fighting Undead. Right now we’re dealing with a lot of
Undead and all of a sudden we see a lot of Sparrians (you know, the same guys who
used the Entropic Pulse in the old days) popping up all over the place who may be
looking to find a way to do another magical ritual.
Is it possible that a ritual similar to the Entropic Pulse might be used to deal
with the growing threat of Undead that’s rising, kind of on a global scale?
So now I got to ask myself – “Are all Sparrians evil, or just some of them?” –
“Are there casters, both good and bad, that are looking for ways to boost their magic
using any means necessary, including looking for new arcane fonts by exploring
underwater?” – “Is it possible that some good casters are also looking to boost their
magic so they can combat the growing Undead threat by possibly performing a new
Entropic Ritual even though the end results may be ugly?” and (assuming these
questions might actually be on the right track), here’s the big question:
“If casters have a plan to get rid of the Undead using a powerful ritual that
utilizes Entropic Magic, would those same casters come forth and lay their cards on
the table, trying to get help from the Empire and the Federation; or, are they still so
nervous about hate and prejudice against their craft that they keep their motives quiet
simply out of fear, thereby confusing everyone?”
Anyhow, like I mentioned before, I don’t really know much here, all that you
read above is mainly just me making a few hunches on some crazy theories. But I’ll
say this: the only thing I know for sure is that you don’t find out answers without
asking questions.

Rare Cosmological Events Draw
With many threats rising all over the face of Rues, one
wonders what may be prompting the sudden emergence of
these strange and dark powers. Naturally there are many
theories that are grounded in solid proof; but some
speculate the inspiration from attacks and other threats
could be motivated by elements that are more unorthodox
and possibly bordering on the metaphysical.
Many scholars in Rues are finding themselves
looking toward the skies more frequently; studying the
stars and noting the constellations and strange occurrences
that have happened in the heavens. Of course, there are
many things that occur in the heavens besides just the stars
and perhaps the most noted of them is the moon itself.
As everyone knows, there will be a partial Lunar Eclipse shortly after the next
Gathering; specifically on the 13 th of this month. While it is true that most of the
people of Rues will not be able to see this astrological occurrence, this partial eclipse
can best be seen below the equator;
the path of which expands in a gentle
arc over the eastern side of the lower
In short, it will be best noticed over
the very same land that was once a
kingdom long ago, before it became a
If these occurrences are not enough
to interest you, consider that on the
28 th of this month a Blood Moon shall
be visible. This is a rare astrological
occurrence, in which a Total Lunar
Eclipse has occurred. This shall be
the forth such Total Lunar Eclipse
since April 15, 1214.
Is there a possible connection between this event and the sudden discovery of
an active private organization seeking for rare artifacts (often considered cursed)
which was kept at a museum and had the symbol of “The Cult of the Moonless Night”?
If there is indeed a coloration between a sudden interest in this dark cult and
the actual appearance of four Blood Moons in roughly eighteen months than it is
likely that members of the Faith who wish to hunt cultists should keep their eyes open
and explore this possibility carefully.

Knowing the Types of Undead and
Their Powers
In the past year the citizens of Fortune’s Bend have been
attacked by more and more undead. During these attacks
the citizens have noticed a marked consistency with both
the nature of the undead and various powers connected to
A special thanks to the wisdom and lore of one Darthurus Swiftfoot, sometimes
known as “Swift”, a Veteran Warrior with the 505 Division of the Empire as well as a
self-proclaimed “Ultimate Bad-Ass”; his information have helped to identify the
Undead, and hopefully to better understand them on the field of battle.
When fighting Undead, remember that their abilities are linked to how they
died. Therefore, a Purposed Race who had bled to death, either because of battle or
simply through an accident, is one that comes back as “The Bled”. Of course, there are
other ways to die and all of those deaths come unique powers to plague you if you
encounter them.
Anguished: Those who have suffered and whose suffering led to their ultimate
demise. Their power is to cause “Agony” in those who assail them.
Bled: Those who have bled to death. When they are damaged they can “heal”
that damage by regaining their “health” by tasting fresh blood that is on
their weapons.
Mangled: Those who have died as a result of massive internal injuries or broken
bones. Typically these are covered with bruises; often their rotting flesh
seems “Black and Blue”. Be careful of them, as they can Maim those
who they attack.
Ravenous: Having starved, they hunger in death; some say they can “Frenzy” and
other say can use “Disease”. Whatever the case, be wary when fighting
with them.
Smothered: These have died from lack of air. Some have drowned, some have been
smothered by mud and rock (such as being buried alive) and some
simply have died from smoke inhalation. They are able to use “Silence”
on you.
